Every unit should have a minimum of one member of the leadership team who is a first aider, and a first aider is required to be present at any Girlguiding activity.

You can complete your first aid training in two ways.

1st response, which is the first aid course set up with Girlguiding and Scouts and you can complete this course by completing local training sessions through either Girlguiding or Scouts. These sessions are organised and are run locally, so speak to your commissioner about booking onto a course or visit your county website.

There are 3 options available to complete 1st response:

  • E-learning and a full, 6-hour day of in-person training.
  • E-learning and 3 lots of 2-hour in-person training dates.
  • E-learning and 3 lots of 2-hour sessions. (Session 1 must be delivered in-person, sessions 2 and 3 are delivered as a webinar.)

We encourage you to do all elements of 1st response within 3 months of each other and your 1st response training cannot be added to your GO record until you have a completed 1st response e-learning.

If you have completed an external qualification, provided that the course takes at least six hours to complete. All recognised prior learning or external courses will need to be verified through the external first aid area of the learning platform. This will be verified by your region first aid verifier team. You'll be asked to complete your 1st response e-learning (if you haven't already done so) before you're able to upload your external course for verification. You'll be asked to provide your certificate as well as information regarding how your external course has covered the 1st response syllabus.

If you're a doctor, nurse or other health care professional you'll need to provide evidence of a current, in date training such as BLS, ILS or ALS. You'll need to submit this evidence through the external first aid area of the learning platform. along with the information form. A first aid verifier will then review this with you. If approved through verification, this will last for the duration of the certificate you've provided.
